Chelsea's story

A language she has spent years learning about

My daughter, Chelsea Veasley, has been accepted into CIEE's High School Semester Abroad program and placed in Tokyo, Japan. This will be her first time traveling outside the United States—a chance to continue her education while experiencing a language and culture she has spent years learning about.

Chelsea began studying Japanese during her sophomore year. Her classes and independent study have helped her build a foundation, but she is eager to learn through everyday conversations and life in Japan.

“My main personal goal in the semester abroad program would be to expand my knowledge of the Japanese language.”— Chelsea Veasley

Her interest began with Japanese cartoons she enjoyed growing up and grew to include Japanese music. Now, she wants to understand more of the language and culture behind the things that inspired her.

In Tokyo, Chelsea looks forward to exploring the city's pop-culture shops and places like Ueno Park. She also understands that studying and communicating in another language will challenge her. She hopes that experience will help her become more independent, strengthen her problem-solving skills, and grow more confident connecting with others.

    FAQ

How will the money be used?

Contributions go first to Chelsea's $12,500 CIEE tuition, paid in five $2,500 installments, and to payment-processing fees (estimated at $500). Any funds remaining after tuition and fees will help cover Chelsea's daily expenses while she is in Japan.

Can I pay CIEE directly toward Chelsea's tuition?
    Is my contribution tax-deductible?

No. This is a personal fundraiser for Chelsea's education, not a charitable donation. Payments credited to an individual student's CIEE balance are also not tax-deductible; CIEE's own FAQ notes that program fees for a specific student cannot be made as a charitable contribution.
